Thinking of switching to a fully electric car in 2025? It will be the last year you can buy all EV models at duty-free prices; after that, only those models assembled locally will continue to have the exemption.
But before you commit to buying an EV, we suggest that you ‘live’ with one for a while to see if you are comfortable with things like recharging times and range which may require adjusting your motoring habits.
The car companies selling EVs will let you have a test-drive but are unlikely to let you take one home, even for a weekend. However, you can now rent EVs for short periods with GoCar’s EV program which has been available in the Klang Valley since the end of 2021.
Now, in collaboration with Yinson GreenTech’s drivEV, the GoCar EV-sharing concept is introduced in Johor Bahru. “The success of our EV sharing fleet in Klang Valley has proven that zero-emission mobility is not just a vision but a practical and scalable solution for modern urban transport. By expanding this initiative to Johor Bahru, in collaboration with drivEV, we are taking another significant step toward reducing carbon footprints and promoting sustainable travel,” said Wong Hoe Mun, CEO of GoCar Malaysia.
“This launch not only supports Johor Bahru residents but also offers Singaporean visitors an eco-friendly way to explore the city, reinforcing our commitment to making zero-emissions mobility accessible to everyone, everywhere,” said Mr. Wong.
To further enhance seamless travel, GoCar has partnered with Handal Indah Sdn Bhd, which is a subsidiary of HI Mobility Berhad, to offer convenient connections for commuters on the Electric Causeway Link buses. Travellers arriving from Singapore can conveniently continue their journey within Johor Bahru using EVs that are available at Toppen Shopping Centre and other strategic locations near major bus drop-off points.
The EV models available are the GWM ORA Good Cat, available at rates from RM24.90 per hour to RM199 per day, and the GAC AION Y Plus which has sharing rates from RM27.90 per hour or RM279 per day. In order to make bookings, you will first have to install the GoCar app (available from Apple AppStore and Google Play Store) on your smartphone.
For a limited period, users can book the AION Y Plus (pictured above) for 5 hours at a special rate of just RM100 (excluding CDW, Flex, and SST charges) using the code ‘JBJOLT’ when booking.
