SAIC Motor Malaysia ready to take bookings for Cyberster

SAIC Motor Malaysia is ready to take bookings for the Cyberster, the British (but part of China’s SAIC Motor since 2007) brand’s first fully electric roadster.

Launched in some neighbouring countries earlier in the year, the Cyberster will have a price estimated at less than RM350,000. Malaysians are lucky to be able to buy it duty-free, thanks to the government’s EV incentive program up till the end of 2025.

Customers can choose from a range of 4 exterior colours – Dynamic Red, Camden Grey, Inca Yellow, and English White. The Dynamic Red and Camden Grey options come with black and red interiors, while Inca Yellow and English White bodies will be with grey interiors. All models have a black bonnet.

The Cyberster was designed at the MG advanced studio in London, evolving from a concept first shown in 2021 to a production model launched last year. Among its distinctive features are the scissors doors which open upwards, like a number of exotic supercars.

As a roadster, the 2-seat Cyberster has a retractable soft top but MG has shown another model in concept for called the Cyber GTS which is essentially a hardtop version expected to go on sale in 2025.

For the Malaysian market, SAIC Motor Malaysia will be offering the Cyberster with a sports interior package that includes leather upholstered sports seats with Alcantara inserts and a Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The dashboard layout is driver-centric with a 10.25-inch display ahead of the steering wheel flanked by 7-inch auxiliary screens on either side. There’s also another touchscreen in the middle which is for managing the infotainment system and ventilation modes.

Currently, the Cyberster has only one powertrain with dual motors for all-wheel drive. The total output of the motors is 375 kW (503 ps)/725 Nm which draw power from a 77 kWh battery. Claimed range is 446 kms, with a 0 to 100 km/h time said to be 3.2 seconds.

Charging the battery, when done with the 7 kW AC charger can complete the process from 10% to 100% in approximately 10.5 hours. When using a 150 kW DC fast-charger, 38 minutes will take the level from 10% to 80%.

The Cyberster and other MG models will be on display at the Auto Car Expo (ACE) 2024 at the Setia City Convention Centre in Setia Alam, Selangor this weekend (26/27 October). Booking will be accepted at the venue and test-drives are available (though we’re not sure if the public can test-drive the Cyberster).
