The Proton Saga is a name that is embedded in the history of the country as the first Malaysian car.
Born 39 years ago as the first product of the Malaysian National Car project, the Saga is the oldest model in Proton’s range, continuously produced since the first unit rolled off the line on July 9, 1985.
To date, over 2 million units have been produced and sold not only in Malaysia but also in other countries. It has undergone evolutionary and generational changes over the years and remains Proton’s bestselling model with reliability and durability proven.
Original mission of Saga
More importantly, it continues to fulfil the original mission of providing Malaysians with an affordable car, making it the first car for many and contributing to the motorisation of the country.
In July 2024, sales of the Saga totalled 7,855 units, the best single-month achievement for the model since October 2013. Cumulatively, sales for the first 7 months of 2024 have reached 42,693 units, an 8% increase over the same period in 2023.
Saga story will continue
The Saga story is set to continue as Proton and Geely, DRB-HICOM’s partner in the Malaysian automaker, explore enhancement options for the model.
With R&D centres in Malaysia and China, collaborative efforts between the companies continue to accelerate to conceptualise, design, develop and manufacture new vehicles.
These capabilities are strengthened by enhancing the synergies of Proton’s existing in-house competencies with the resources and know-how of Geely.
Upgrading of Proton’s legacy models will involve leveraging joint resources with Geely to support the work led by Proton R&D engineers in Malaysia.
Merdeka month promotion
To celebrate Malaysia’s National Day and to give back to the rakyat, Proton is offering RM500 rebate with its ‘SAGA-MERDEKA EASY TO OWN’ campaign throughout the month of August 2024.
“The Proton Saga has come a long way in serving the nation by enhancing mobility. At Proton, we are steadfast in our commitment to driving Saga sales forward, especially with our latest promotion timed to coincide with Merdeka month. This initiative not only reflects our commitment to bring Saga to newer heights but also celebrates our national pride, reinforcing the Saga as a symbol of Malaysian innovation and resilience,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar.
