Unveiled in mid-2023, the Volvo EX30 will soon be in Malaysia. As the ‘EX’ designation indicates, this is a member of the electrified range of SUVs and it is the smallest model in the range.
2024 World Urban Car at the World Car Award
The compact form of the EX30 – 4223 mm in length and 1837 mm wide – makes it a practical car for urban use, and that has been recognised with the 2024 World Urban Car at the World Car Award.
Its design incorporates familiar elements of Volvo SUVs including a digital rendition of the ‘Thor’s Hammer’ signature in the headlights.
Sustainable Experience Architecture
The model uses a variation of the open-source Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) developed by Geely for use by its brands. The pure EV architecture is open-source and available to other automakers if they are interested.
Volvo Car Malaysia has not indicated what drivetrain specifications will be for the Malaysian market of the three that Volvo offers.
Drivetrain options
These consist of a Single Motor version with 200 kW (272 hp) and a 51 kWh LFP battery; a Single Motor Extended Range with NMC battery capacity of 69 kWh; and a Twin Motor Performance model with 315 kW (428 hp) with a 69 kWh LFP battery.
Depending on the power supply at the charging station, the battery can be recharged from 10% to 80% capacity in a little over 25 minutes. The Twin Motor variant can be charged with a supply up to 153 kW DC, while the standard-range model can accept a supply of up to 134 kW.
With a fully charged battery pack, the range is claimed to be up to 476 kms (depending on the battery capacity).
Minimized carbon footprint
Besides zero tailpipe emissions, the EX30 has been developed with a focus on keeping its carbon footprint to a minimum across the car’s complete lifecycle. In addition to cutting its CO2 footprint to 75% of Volvo’s existing electric models, the SUV also has the highest levels of recycled and sustainable materials in a Volvo production car.
Though the body is compact, the generous wheelbase of 2650 mm means that the cabin is spacious and comfortable, befitting of a premium model.
As with all Volvos, there is Scandinavian interior design merged with digital systems. For example, Google built-in runs the latest version of Volvo’s infotainment system.
A high standard of safety is already expected of a Volvo and state-of-the-art restraint technology, as well as structural design that meets tough in-house safety requirements that prepare Volvo vehicles for various real-world scenarios.
Hands-free parking
The EX30 is the brand’s first model to include a new generation of its Park Pilot Assist feature. This can handle all types of parking spaces, including parallel, curved, perpendicular and diagonal fishbone-style. The system operates the steering, brakes and engine power so the driver only needs to monitor its movement (just in case…).
Volvo Cars expects the EX30 to be one of its best-selling models this year, with almost 48,000 units delivered globally in the first half of 2024.
It is currently produced in China and from next year, also in Belgium at the same factory where the XC40 and C40 are made.
Assembled in Malaysia
As with almost all Volvo models sold in Malaysia since 1967, the EX30 is likely to originate from the plant in Shah Alam, Selangor. This plant is the automaker’s production hub for the region and has been assembling electrified models for some time now.
