GWM Malaysia to launch locally-assembled HAVAL H6 soon

Great Wall Motor (GWM) is one of the Chinese automakers that began exporting vehicles as far back as the late 1990s, among the earliest to do so. To date, it has exported over 1.4 million vehicles to some 60 countries.

With a constant stream of new and better models as well as a growing presence in the EV segment, GWM has registered increasing volumes. In the first half of 2024, 201,500 vehicles were exported, a 62.59% increase over the same period in 2023.

4 strategic global pillars
One of the secrets of GWM’s success in overseas markets has been its long-termism business strategy.

This strategy consists of 4 strategic globalization pillars: Locally Built, Locally Operated, Locally Cultivated and Supply Chain Integration.

The strategy is appreciated by the governments of many countries as localisation of production means investments and job creation, along with transfer of technology.

It is also applied in Malaysia and GWM is collaborating with EPMB (EP Manufacturing Berhad), a Malaysian automotive investment holding company, to assemble some GWM models.

HICOM Pegoh Industrial Park Melaka
The EPMB assembly plant is located in the HICOM-Pegoh Industrial Park in Melaka, where Honda Malaysia also has its assembly plant.

While this is not the first time that GWM products are being assembled in Malaysia (they were assembled by a local company 12 years ago in Kedah), it is the first time that GWM is directly involved in the activities. The same goes for other aspects of the business such as marketing, distribution, sales and aftersales.

HAVAL H6 is the first model
The first product from the assembly plant located in Melaka will be the latest version of the HAVAL H6, during the third quarter of 2024.

The HAVAL brand was originally a model line in the GWM range but its enormous popularity led to the name being used as a standalone brand from 2013.

The current H6 generation was launched in 2020. It is available with turbocharged petrol engines with 1.5-litre and 2-litre displacements, as well as hybrid electric powertrains. It is likely that the model assembled in Malaysia will start with just the petrol engines although GWM does plan to assemble EVs at a later stage.
The H6 has been around since 2011 and is now in its fourth generation. It is the bestselling SUV in China and to date, over 4 million have been sold globally, making it the bestselling GWM model.

Regional expansion strategy
The move to assemble its vehicles in Malaysia – its first local assembly project in ASEAN – is part of GWM’s global expansion strategy in the region, with a focus on implementing its ASEAN new energy strategy. This adheres to the company’s 3 core values of delivering new energy, new intelligence, and a new experience to its customers.

“Our commitment to delivering innovative products and excellent services has always been at the core of our mission in Malaysia,” said Mike Cui An Qi, Managing Director of GWM Malaysia. “We aim to establish GWM as a renowned and trusted brand, recognised for our dedication to quality and customer satisfaction.”

The current range of GWM models in Malaysia is varied, with EVs, crossovers and off-road 4x4s.
