The Isuzu D-MAX has been in the Malaysian market for almost 20 years, having been the first model launched by Isuzu Malaysia after it was established in 2004. Like other pick-up trucks in the early 2000s, the D-MAX represented the new generation which was more passenger car-oriented. It offered features and convenience like a passenger car, drawing many to consider it as a primary vehicle for daily use rather than only as a workhorse.
Epitomizing ryoga
Three generations later, the D-MAX has evolved to become one of the more stylish trucks in the market, epitomizing ryoga – the Japanese term for ‘rising above others and achieving greatness’. The current generation, which debuted in 2021, has seen strong growth in sales with some 340,000 units sold worldwide.
In the past, trucks were treated like other commercial vehicles, with a longer product cycle than passenger cars. The customers didn’t care about changes as what was more important was durability and capability; if the looks remained unchanged for many years, that was fine.
Popular but updating still needed
However, trucks today are bought by people who use them for the same roles as passenger cars, and therefore have the same sort of expectations of periodic change and updating, if not upgrading. Thus while the D-MAX continues to be successful and popular, Isuzu knows it still needs to refresh it and that has been done for the 2024 model.
Apart from revised design elements, there are also enhanced high-tech features with the capabilities of the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) being upgraded. “Since its introduction, the third-generation Isuzu D-MAX has been the toast of the industry, optimising a balance of classic Isuzu core strengths, technological advancements and detailed craftsmanship. This new model takes it up a notch and delivers the next level of pick-up truck motoring to its owners,” said Shunsuke Okazoe, CEO of Isuzu Malaysia.
Malaysia is the third market in the world to get the updated D-MAX which is made in Thailand. While this is due to it coming from the factory that is the global production hub in CBU (completely built-up) form, it also reflects the Malaysian market’s importance to the automaker. Over the past 2 years, D-MAX sales in Malaysia were all-time highs, with 9,211 units sold in 2022 and 9,650 units in 2023.
Sharper, sportier looks
The exterior changes on the 2024 D-MAX are most obvious at the front with even more distinctive elements that give a sharper, sportier look as well as improving aerodynamics. These include a new headlight cluster, bumper, grille and bonnet.
Other changes are the new alloy rims and an attractive combination new tail lamp design. The tailgate has also been revised and besides an easy-lift feature on all versions, it can also be locked on the flagship X-Terrain.
A more comfortable space within
Inside too, the new D-MAX has a number of updates to make motoring more enjoyable, with classic Japanese origami Miura design elements and mood-enriching ambient lighting making the cabin a more comfortable space.
While there are no immediately visible changes to the layout, closer inspection will show that the e-Lumax multi-information display and graphics on the instrument panel are revised and there is a Larger 10-inch touchscreen display (but only for the X-Terrain). There are also Type C USB ports instead of the older Type A ports which means you have to carry Type C cables.
Improved Allsight ADAS sensors
Sensor technology keeps improving, making active safety systems more capable. The stereo camera for the Allsight ADAS in the X-Terrain now has a wider field of view extending to 120 degrees from 40 degrees. It can not only detect vehicles and other objects over a broader area ahead but can also detect vehicles as far as 150 metres away (30 metres further than before).
This means the pro-active systems that prevent collisions can ‘see’ better and analyse situations earlier to take action which can include autonomous emergency braking. This increased viewing capability also improves Turn Assist with pedestrian protection.
The Allsight ADAS has a comprehensive set of active safety systems to alert the driver of dangers and take autonomous action to prevent accidents. A new addition Is Rear Cross Traffic Brake, which not only monitors both sides as the truck is reversing out of a bay (and alerts the driver) but also stops the vehicle if there is another vehicle approaching.
This contributes to the D-MAX having ASEAN NCAP’s top rating of 5 stars which also takes into account the strong structure with a Dynamic Drive Platform and passive safety systems such as 7 airbags.
Two Blue Power engines
As before, there are two Blue Power turbodiesel engine choices, with displacements of 1.9 litres 150 ps/350 Nm) and 3.0 litres (190 ps/450 Nm). The smaller displacement engine has proven itself over the past few years since being introduced, offering strong performance and also economy. The bigger 4JJ3 TCX engine is also a proven unit and is especially popular in East Malaysia where the roadtax structure does not penalise larger engines.
While there would be improvements here and there, the general powertrain specifications are unchanged. However, there is a new Rough Terrain Mode for all 4×4 Double Cab variants. With this mode activated, be it in 2H, 4H or 4L, traction is enhanced with the vehicle managing power distribution seamlessly. This allows drivers without much off-road skills to venture onto rugged terrain with more confidence.
Enhancing the purchasing experience
With online shopping becoming more common, Isuzu Malaysia has introduced a new digital platform to enhance the purchase journey, complementing the physical showrooms. Customers now have Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to discover the features and prowess of the D-MAX without having to be at the showroom.
Once they know everything they want to know and just need to experience the vehicle, they can then contact a dealership to arrange for a test-drive and begin their purchasing process. Those who experience the VR or physical test-drive of the new D-MAX X-Terrain between May 15 and June 30 2024 will receive an exclusive gift.
“We believe that prospects will discover much more through the use of today’s digital technology. This allows us to showcase the capabilities of the vehicle anywhere and anytime, be it in homes or in a mall. This is part of the new elevated Isuzu Experience that includes revised outlets that feature our new Corporate Identity, intuitive new website including a 360° virtual showroom, a new and immersive roadshow setup, and new AR and VR experience,” said Kenkichi Sogo, Chief Operating Officer of Isuzu Malaysia.
