No toll charges on April 8 and April 9

Toll charges are part of the cost of travelling on highways. You can save some money by using the ‘old roads’ but the slower speeds mean longer journey times. Highways like the North-South Expressway and East Coast Highway provide fast and safe motoring, and it’s worth paying toll for such benefits.

However, on April 8 and April 9, motorists (in Class 1 vehicles which are privately-registered) will not have to pay toll charges. With millions travelling during the Hari Raya period, the government will pay for the toll charges on the two days. The compensation paid to the highway concessionaires is an estimated RM37.6 million to cover the two days they do not collect toll.

The exemption is applicable to all toll plazas on highways except for two at the southern border. These are the Sultan Iskandar Building Toll Plaza and the Tanjung Kupang Toll Plaza in Johor where many non-Malaysians would also pass through.

“This toll exemption by the government is a gesture of concern and a shared joy with the Malaysian people,” according to a statement by the Works Ministry.

Before you start off
Wherever you are going during the holidays, remember to check your vehicle’s tyre pressures  (including the spare tyre). Punctures are not so common these days but can still happen and you don’t want to take the spare wheel out to find that it has low pressure because you have not checked it for months (or even years!).

Be sure to check the tyre pressures before starting your journey.

Stop if you are drowsy
It goes without saying that if you are the sole driver, be sure to get enough rest before the journey. Drowsiness can lead to ‘microsleep’ where you may actually fall asleep for a second or two… which can be very dangerous as the car may go off the road. Should you feel drowsy, make a stop at an R&R or lay-by and get some rest.

Have a safe journey!
