One hundred years old this year, MG Motor is one of the old British brands still in existence though it is now owned by China’s SAIC Motor Group (since 2007). Under SAIC, the brand was redeveloped and is growing again with a presence in many markets.
The MG of today is no longer what old-timers will remember as a sportscar brand though it does have models with high performance.
It is also trending towards electrification and its current range already has some EV models, including a sportscar called the Cyberster. It is likely that it will offer EVs in Malaysia since these can be imported and sold tax-free. It may also follow Chery Malaysia and have some combustion engine models in the product mix.
SAIC has already established a subsidiary – SAIC Motor Malaysia Sdn Bhd – to handle distribution, sales and marketing, and after sales services of MG in Malaysia. Stay tuned for more news as the brand will be launched in 2024.
