2024 North American Car, Truck & Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards

As in other Car of the Year (COTY) awards in most countries, electrified models also took the top awards in the 2024 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year (NACTOY).

The NACTOY awards, which goes back to 1994, began with just car and truck categories, but with the growing significance of SUVs, a Utility category was added from 2017 for such models.

North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards

There were 52 eligible models and by the Detroit Auto Show in September, the list was narrowed to the 25 vehicles deemed ‘The Best of 2024’ and then to 9 finalist. These were the Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford Super Duty, Genesis Electrified GV70, Honda Accord, Hyundai IONIQ 6, Hyundai Kona/Kona EV, Kia EV9, Toyota Prius/Prius Prime.

Over the course of the year, NACTOY’s 50 jurors spent hundreds of hours test driving, researching and evaluating vehicles on automotive innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction, user experience and value, leveraging their experiences and expertise to cast their votes.

And the 2024 North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year winners are…

Toyota Prius [2023]
Juror’s comment: “The Toyota Prius and Prius Prime are not just handsomely styled hatchbacks; they represent the future of the automobile by blending traditional internal combustion with electric drivetrains. Of particular note is the plug-in version which offers more than 65 kms of pure electric range, allowing most owners to skip regular gas station visits.”
Ford F-Series Super Duty [2023]
Juror’s comment: “The Ford Super Duty retains its leadership in the heavy-duty pick-up truck category with its impressive towing, payload, torque, and horsepower figures. Its 4 engine choices are highlighted by the new standard 6.8-litre gasoline V8 and 6.7-litre Power Stroke diesel V8. And the big Super Duty is remarkably comfortable and easy to drive.”
Kia EV9 [2023]
Juror’s comment: “The Kia EV9 offers a genuine 3-row configuration in a battery-electric SUV at a price significantly below the 6-figure level [in North America] for all other 3-row electric SUVs. It opens new territory for EVs, and its looks draw attention well before anyone finds out it’s electric. And it’ll be built in the U.S. within a year. Another home run for Kia.”
