Before MPVs appeared in the automotive landscape, window vans were the popular people-movers and cargo-carriers. Nissan is among the companies which still offers window vans as they are still useful vehicles.
To show the versatility of the window van, Nissan has customized its Caravan model into a Disaster Support Mobile-Hub. This vehicle, to be shown at the coming 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon, would serve as a valuable vehicle for rescuers at areas which have had natural disasters.
Portable Battery Concept
Besides having the load-carrying capabilities of the Caravan, the concept vehicle can also supply electricity. This comes from the Portable Battery Concept which utilises reclaimed battery packs from the Nissan LEAF EV. Introduced in September 2023, these are converted into portable generators and now on sale in Japan.
Second life for EV batteries
The Portable Battery by LEAF (shown above) was developed by Nissan, in collaboration with JVCKenwood Corp. and 4R Energy Corp. It gives a ‘second life’ to EV battery packs instead of just disposing of them. With over 650,000 units of the LEAF sold worldwide since it debuted in 2010, there are a lot of battery packs to be converted.
