Since 2001, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) has run an environment education programme as an important part of its Corporate Social Responsibility activities. The national-level programme, in partnership with the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MOE), is one demonstration of UMWT’s commitment to empowering young individuals to engage actively in developing sustainable environmental solutions.
Known as the Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) programme, it is in line with the UMWT’s commitment in placing environmental conservation first. The priority is guided by the Toyota Motor Corporation’s environmental action plan to set path towards achieving zero CO2 emissions by 2050.
More than RM15 million spent to date
The TEY programme has been one of the longest running environmental programmes of its type involving secondary school students nationwide. It has been run annually without fail, even during the COVID-19 pandemic period, with more than RM15 million spent to date. More than 300,000 students from 521 schools have participated in projects relating to environmental issues affecting their surrounding communities.
The 23rd edition this year see participation from 16 schools nationwide. As in previous years, there are prizes totalling up to RM80,000 for the best projects which propose innovative solutions. Recognising the role of teachers in providing guidance and support for each school’s team, there is also a prize for the Most Supportive Teacher.
Workshop for participants
Prior to the launch of TEY 2024 yesterday, students from all the participating schools were brought together for an intensive workshop on Toyota’s 8 Steps Problem Solving Methodology (PSM). This is an approach practiced by UMWT employees to solve various types of problems, including those involving the environment. With the PSM, the students can develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills which will help them in their projects.
As they progress through the project up till the end of October 2024, they will also have to go through a market validation phase where their ideas – in the form of a product or service – are implemented and tested with the community of choice (usually within their locality). Each team will make a presentation to a panel of judges who will determine the best submissions.
Over the 5-month period, the teams are also required to publicise their project and provide updates via social media, providing them with an experience at communication with the public on environmental issues.
Aligned with Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050
“The Toyota Eco Youth program is aligned with the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, aiming for carbon neutrality and a significant positive environmental impact among high school students and teachers. Additionally, we strive to ensure that the sustainability of every school project beyond the conclusion of this year’s program,” said Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.
He added that through the Toyota Eco Youth programme, UMWT is actively addressing current environmental challenges while equipping youths with essential skills for future problem-solving. “This initiative instils our ‘Move Your World’ philosophy in young minds, pushing the boundaries for a sustainable future,” he said.
While it is in the business of providing cars that are ever better, safe and environmentally friendly, UMWT also aims to nurture the environmental stewards of tomorrow, encouraging innovation and practical solutions for ecological challenges. This 23rd edition of the program promises to further this legacy, supporting young innovators in their efforts to create a greener, more sustainable future.
